SERVICES
Dyslexia/ Literacy Therapy
Dyslexia is a learning disorder that affects reading and writing skills. The Learning Nook is the only provider in Wenatchee that offers the Wilson Reading Program. This is an Orton-Gillingham based curriculum for dyslexics that follows the Science of Reading principles proven to be the most effective way to teach a struggling student how to read, write, and spell. People who do not have characteristics of dyslexia can still find reading and spelling difficult. The Learning Nook provides effective multisensory structured literacy curriculum based on the Science of Reading to achieve these learners' goals. To make a significant gain in literacy, two one hour sessions are recommended each week. Sessions can be done in person or virtually.
Dyscalculia/ Math Therapy
Dyscalculia is a learning disorder that affects a person's ability to understand number based information and math. People who have dyscalculia struggle with numbers and math because their brains don't process math-related concepts like the brains of people without this disorder. The Nook provides a visual approach to problem solving while helping sooth math anxiety. Math therapy is geared to what our students need which may include number sense, fact fluency, and or algebra readiness. One on one therapy and groups of up to three students are offered.
Dyslexia Screening
Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that creates challenges in reading, writing, and spelling. It affects at least 1 in 5 people to varying degrees. There are specific characteristics that people with dyslexia can possess. Understanding these characteristics can be life changing. Screening can be done in person or virtually. Based on the results of the dyslexia screener, I will meet with you to walk through results and discuss recommended next steps. Dyslexic students can thrive in an educational setting. They may need modifications and or accommodations to help them along their educational journey. Results from a dyslexia screening can give information to inform the best accommodations and or modifications for the student. I can assist with advocating and creating recommended 504 student educational plans. After this meeting you will receive your written report as well as additional resources.
